SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 62
April 11, 1997 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test Participation (PSAT/NMSQT) |
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is designed to
enhance students' eligibility to receive funds from the
National Merit Scholarship Program. In an effort to improve
scholarship opportunities for Virginia's college-bound
students, I am asking school divisions to encourage
students, especially those in grades 10 and 11, to take the
PSAT/NMSQT.
To aid in preparing students for the PSAT/NMSQT, the College
Board has provided the attached Test Skills book. Please
share it with appropriate staff members. For additional
information you may contact Ms. Paula Potter at the College
Board at (404) 636-9465, Extension 224, or Dr. James E.
Laws, Jr., at the Department of Education at (804) 225-2924.
