SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 71
April 25, 1997 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Materials for "BEFORE YOU SUSPEND STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES" |
In the near future, a packet of materials entitled BEFORE YOU SUSPEND STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES will be sent to you. This packet includes a videotape, checklist, and manuscript. It is expected that your Director of Special Education will be particularly interested in the packet. Disciplining a student, especially a student with a disability, presents increasingly difficult legal challenges. Consequently, school personnel must ensure that all required procedures are followed and that the rights of students and their parents are protected at all steps in the disciplinary process. These materials are designed to assist personnel in this complicated task. The written materials are available in braille and the video tape is available in closed captioned upon request from Ms. Ossie Lawrence at (804) 225-2932. Questions about this resource document may be referred to the technical assistance staff assigned to your region, or Chet Walrod, Specialist, Office of Special Education and Student Services at (804) 786-9775.
