Verification of Data Transmitted to Department of
Taxation for Use in Composite Index |
A memorandum was sent June 3, 1997, by the Department of Taxation to the local Commissioners of Revenue and Directors of Finance asking for assistance in verifying the information used to assign the 1995 adjusted gross income (AGI) data to localities for purposes of computing the composite index for the 1998-2000 biennium. This verification involves reviewing a listing of the zip codes for each locality. AGI reported on tax returns filed directly with the Department of Taxation is assigned to a locality based on the nine digit zip code associated with the address reported on the return. The Department of Taxation is asking that notification be returned to them by July 1, 1997, indicating whether or not their zip code information is correct. If the locality does not agree with the information, it has until September 1, 1997, to specify in writing the formal basis for disagreement. Documentation must be presented which will support any proposed corrections. We are notifying you of this process in case you wish to offer assistance in verifying this data to the Commissioner of Revenue or Director of Finance in your locality. We hope that careful review of this data before the composite index is computed will surface any concerns and eliminate the need for revisions later. If you have any questions concerning this, please contact Mr. Dan Timberlake, Assistant Superintendent for Finance, at (804) 225-2025, Mrs. June Eanes, Budget Director, at (804) 225-2060, or Mr. Kent Dickey, Data Analyst, at (804) 225-2806.
