Last December, I sent out a joint letter with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) supporting voluntary Integrated Pest Management programs in schools and indicated training workshops would be available for school personnel. The Virginia Cooperative Extension and VDACS will jointly offer four free one day workshops for facility managers and their staff on developing and implementing an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. The subject matter to be covered includes: Principals and Practices of IPM IPM Strategies for Managing Key Pests Certification and Training Requirements Developing an IPM Plan for Schools The following dates and locations have been established: Date Location July 30, 1997 William Fleming High School 3649 Ferncliff Avenue, NW Roanoke August 5, 1997 Lloyd C. Bird High School 10301 Courthouse Road Chesterfield August 6, 1997 Central Library (Support Service Library) 4100 Virginia Beach Boulevard Virginia Beach August 13, 1997 W. C. Taylor Middle School 350 Shirley Avenue Warrenton The workshops will start promptly at 9:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. Lunch will be on your own. If you are unable to attend the workshop in your area, you are welcome to register for any of the other programs. Please register no later than July 22, 1997, by calling Don Delorme, Environmental Program Analyst, Office of Pesticide Services, VDACS in Richmond by phone at (804) 371-0152 or by fax at (804) 786-9149. You may also contact Don Delorme if you are unable to attend, but would like additional information regarding IPM in schools. Detailed directions are included with this memo to each workshop. IPM in Schools Workshops - Detailed Directions Virginia Beach Central Library (Support Service Library) From Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway (Rt. 44) eastbound, take Exit 3B (Independence Blvd. North). Turn right onto Virginia Beach Blvd. and proceed approximately one mile. The Central Library (also referred to as the Support Service Library) will be on your left at the intersection of Virginia Beach Blvd. and Stepney Lane. Classroom/Auditorium entrance is at the rear of the building. Call Randy Jackson, Virginia Cooperative Extension, at (757) 427-4769 if more specific directions are needed. Warrenton's W.C. Taylor Middle School The school is located on Shirley Ave. (also referred to as business Rt. 29 or business Rt. 15) in Warrenton on the southern end of the town. Call Chuck Hoysa, Virginia Cooperative Extension, at (540) 341-7950 ext. 14 if more specific directions are needed. Roanoke City's William Flemming High School From Interstate 81 turn onto Interstate 581 South. From Rt. 460 or Rt. 220 turn onto Interstate 581 North. From I-581 take the Hershberger Road WEST Exit (not the Hershberger Rd. exit listed for the airport). At the second traffic light turn right onto Ferncliff Avenue. Turn right into the second school parking lot (not the first lot which is for Ruffner Middle School). The auditorium entrance is located through the double doors at the edge of the parking lot. Bird High School From Interstate 95 take Exit 62 onto Rt. 288 West. Continue on Rt. 288 West for approximately 5 miles. Turn onto Iron Bridge Rd. South (also referred to as Rt. 10 South). At the first traffic light turn left onto Courthouse Rd. Continue for approximately one mile. School is located on the left just past the intersection of Courthouse Rd. and Krause Rd. The workshop will be held in the commons area located through the school doors at the end of the parking lot.
