| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Fall 1997 Elementary and Secondary School Civil Rights Compliance Report |
Enclosed is a memorandum and information on the Fall 1997 Elementary and Secondary School Civil Rights Compliance Report from the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR). The Compliance Report is required by federal regulations pursuant to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Through the enclosed Information Sheet on Reporting Procedures, OCR is offering school divisions three methods of reporting the compliance report: (1) the traditional paper forms; (2) microcomputer diskette; or (3) mainframe data tape. Please indicate the method you prefer on the attached postcard and return it to the Office for Civil Rights by September 24, 1997. OCR will then send you the actual compliance report forms within six to eight weeks. If you do not select a reporting method, OCR will send you the paper reporting forms to complete. Sample copies of the Compliance Report Forms, ED101 and ED102, are enclosed for your reference regarding information required in the 1997 Compliance Report. If you have questions about the compliance report, you may contact Horace P. Webb at Hwebb@pen.k12.va.us; or by telephone at (804) 225-2618; or FAX at (804) 225-2831.
