SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 12
December 4, 1997 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM:
|
Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT:
|
Certificate of Appointment, Oath of Superintendent, and
Renewal of the Division |
The Virginia statute requires that every division superintendent, before entering upon the duties of the office, must take and subscribe the oath prescribed for an officer of the Commonwealth. A certificate of the clerk of the court in which the oath is administered must be submitted to the Department of Education. Attached are copies of the certificate of appointment and oath of superintendent that should be completed at the time the division superintendent is appointed. Many of you have sent these certificates to the Department; therefore, it is not necessary to resubmit using the attached forms. Please maintain these forms on file for future use. Superintendents may only be appointed by a school board from individuals who are named on the List of Eligible Superintendents. Such individuals must hold a division superintendent license, which was established in 1993. Individuals issued a five-year, renewable division superintendent license in 1993 must renew that license in 1998. Renewal of the division superintendent license is based on the requirements outlined in The Virginia Recertification Manual, July 1990. Requests for renewal may be submitted any time after January 1 of the year in which the license expires. Verification of completion of 180 professional development points and the renewal fee of $25 should be sent directly to Dr. Thomas A. Elliott, Assistant Superintendent for Compliance. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Dr. Elliott at (804) 371-2522 if you have any questions. RTL:psp Attachments: A hard copy of this memo and its attachment will be sent to the superintendent's office.
