| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton

| SUBJECT: | Grant Application for FY 1998-99 Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act |
Enclosed you will find the application packet for local school divisions to apply for federal funds under Title IV: Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA) of 1994. The purpose of the legislation is to support programs that prevent violence and promote school safety; that prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, involve parents, and are coordinated with related federal, state, and community efforts and resources through the provision of federal financial assistance. It will be necessary for local school divisions to submit either a consolidated application amendment or an individual application. If the school division elects to submit an individual application, the original and one copy of the application must be submitted to the Department of Education, on or before June 5, 1998. The applications will undergo a peer review and approval process the week of June 15-19, 1998. Successful applicants will receive notification of approval no later than July 1, 1998. School divisions were previously notified under Administrative Supts. Memo No. 11, dated March 13, 1998 about the preliminary level of funding anticipated for FY 1998-99. Final notification of allocations will be made to school divisions after confirmation of final funding has been received from the U.S. Department of Education. The fourteen school divisions determined to have the "greatest need" for additional funds to carry out drug and violence prevention programs will be receiving individual letters of notification from the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
