SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 22
May 15, 1998 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Clarification of the Virginia Wellness-Related Fitness Test |
The Department of Education would like to provide you with additional information to clarify the memorandum sent to the Health and Physical Education contacts on April 15, 1998, regarding the voluntary reporting of the Virginia Wellness- Related Fitness Test Ratings. The Department of Education no longer requires schools to administer, collect, or report physical fitness data. The State Board of Education did not include the reporting of fitness data on the School Performance Report Card, as specified in the Standards of Accreditation, or in their discussion regarding the unabridged version of the School Performance Report Card. The Virginia Wellness-Related Fitness Test(VWRFT), a research-based criterion reference test, will provide teachers information that should be useful in planning for instructional needs of students. The(VWRFT)provides students with options consistent with those allowed in the nationally recognized Presidential Physical Fitness Award program and/or the Prudential FitnessGram program. School divisions and schools are encouraged to adopt a program that provides recognition for students through the Presidential Physical Fitness Awards and/or the Prudential FitnessGram Recognitions. School divisions are encouraged to administered the VWRFT and take advantage of the data analysis service, which is being offered by the Department of Education. If you need additional information, please contact Dr. Sandra Dofflemyer, Health, Physical Education and Driver Education Specialist, at(804)225-2898,(sandy@pen.k12.va.us). PDS/jf
