SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 20
February 6, 1998 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | James E. Laws, Executive to the State Board of Education |
| SUBJECT: | National Air and Space Museum Dulles Center |
The Commonwealth of Virginia and the Smithsonian Institution have entered a joint effort to establish the National Air and Space Museum Dulles Center. Currently, aircraft and spacecraft not on display at the Smithsonian Institution are stored elsewhere. Due to an inadequacy of storage space and a desire to share more of the National Collection with the public, a new museum facility will be constructed at the southeast corner of Dulles Airport along U. S. Route 50 and west of Virginia State Route 28. Although the facility is not scheduled to open to the public until late 2001, we wish to make you aware of Virginia's involvement in it. The Department of Education will work with the Smithsonian staff to help make the new museum a strong resource for teachers and students in Virginia. Should you have any questions, you may contact me at the Department of Education at (804) 225-2540. JELjr/mfm
