SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 41
March 13, 1998 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Thomas A. Elliott
Assistant Superintendent for Compliance |
| SUBJECT: | Virginia Center for Career Transition/Troops to Teachers |
During the past three years, Virginia has participated in the Troops to Teachers Program which contributed funding to support the employment of military personnel as classroom teachers. The incentive grants that provided school divisions funding to supplement teaching salaries of military personnel have been eliminated, and the Troops to Teachers' focus has been redirected to providing placement assistance. A cooperative effort between DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support) and Old Dominion University has resulted in the establishment of the Virginia Center for Career Transition/Troops to Teachers. The Center will provide assistance to military personnel with degrees who are interested in seeking a second career in teaching. The Virginia Center for Career Transition, located at Old Dominion University, offers a nationally recognized Military Career Transition Program (MCTP) that has successfully prepared over 700 teachers in the past nine years. Individuals who have completed the teacher preparation program at Old Dominion University have successfully made the transition from the military to teaching. Their scores on the Praxis Academic Skills Assessments (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) have consistently exceeded national and state passing rates. A service provided through the Virginia Center for Career Transition is a Troops to Teachers data base of employment opportunities. You are invited to post your school division's vacancies directly on the job listing. To request an access code and specific directions outlining procedures to post vacancies, you should contact staff members at the Virginia Center at (800) 560-4317. The Virginia Center is also engaging in two initiatives to enhance the recruitment process: (1) publication of a quarterly Virginia Center for Career Transition Newsletter; and (2) sponsorship of a comprehensive Job Fair/Career Seminar on Thursday, April 30, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the Webb Center at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. Representatives from Virginia school divisions are invited to participate in the job fair and interview prospective teachers. You may reserve a table at the job fair by contacting the MCTP office at (757) 683-3327. I hope you will support the Virginia Center for Career Transition. The initiatives of the Center are providing teachers in several of Virginia's critical shortage areas. Please do not hesitate to contact me at (804) 371-2522 if you have any questions about Old Dominion University's program or the Virginia Center for Career Transition. TAE:psp
