Availability of Adult Education Funds

1. EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Under provisions of Adult Literacy, included in Chapter 30 of the Virginia Acts of Assembly (contingent upon the availability of funds), approximately $250,000 in state funds will be available for providing employee development services that will assist the workforce of the Commonwealth with the educational skills necessary to meet the challenges of tomorrow's workplace. The objectives of the project are to: (1) market workplace education services; (2) train and support adult education and literacy program managers and instructors; (3) train and support workplace education brokers; (4) support workplace education curriculum customization and development; and, (5) link workplace education services with other state initiatives including apprenticeship and the Virginia Community College System programs. 2. SPECIAL EXPERIMENTAL, DEMONSTRATION, AND TEACHER TRAINING PROJECTS Under provisions of Section 353 of the Adult Education Act, (revised by Public Law 100-297 and Amendments) as amended by the National Literacy Act of 1991 (Public Law 102-73), a minimum of 15% of the federal Adult Education Act grant to Virginia must be spent for Special Experimental, Demonstration, and Teacher Training Projects. Eligible applicants for funds under either of these two provisions include local educational agencies, and public or private non-profit agencies, organizations, and institutions. Eligible applicants wishing to apply for funds will be required to submit a proposal. These proposals must be received on or before Friday, April 17, 1998 at 4:00 p.m., in Adult Education Services office, located at the James Monroe Building, 101 N. 14th Street, 21st Floor, Richmond, VA 23219. Copies of the Request for Proposal (RFP) packet -- including policies and procedures, guidelines, and forms -- may be obtained from the Adult Education Services office, Department of Education, P. O.
