SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 94
June 26, 1998 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Technical Assistance Resource Materials for SOL |
The Department of Education is pleased to provide you with the enclosed Virginia Standards of Learning Training Initiative Technical Assistance Resource Materials. The purpose of the resource materials is to assist school division personnel in planning and delivering quality professional development programs in conjunction with the SOL Training Initiative. While the materials do not recommend a specific training approach or model, a host of available resources for planning a staff development program are provided. Background information on the SOL Training Initiative and guidelines for requesting training funds were distributed with Administrative SUPTS. MEMO. NO.23 and are included with the resource notebook. A copy of the resource materials is also being sent to your designated key instructional leader for SOL implementation. The notebook provides information and a list of available resources on the following topics: principles of professional development; professional development resources in history and the social sciences, mathematics, English/reading, science, and instructional technology; program evaluation and monitoring; professional development resources for administrators; and classroom assessment. The resource lists include names of professional organizations and agencies that have a staff development focus, annotated bibliographies, Internet websites, and summaries from literature reviews. While extensive research has been done to provide up-to-date information, these lists can never be considered exhaustive. Please feel free to copy and distribute the enclosed materials as desired. We plan to send you additions to the notebook as we identify other resources. We also encourage you to add your own materials. If you have questions about the SOL Training Initiative or the resource materials, please contact Dr. Patricia I. Wright, Director of Secondary Instruction, (804) 225-2880, or e-mail. PDS/piw Enclosure: A hard copy of this memo and its attachments will be sent to the superintendent's office.
