School Nutrition Programs personnel in the state Department of Education are sponsoring a "New Director's Training Academy for School Nutrition Programs" on Septemnber 29-30, 1998. The academy is designed as an orientation and training program for newly appointed directors, supervisors, and contact persons who are responsible for the overall operation of the School Nutrition Programs (National School Lunch and Breakfast). All directors, supervisors, and contact persons who have been in new job assignments for two years or less are encouraged to attend. The "New Directors Training Academy" will consist of three phases. Phase 1-- A one and a half-day workshop that will provide an opportunity for new directors and supervisors to gain an understanding of the program requirements for effective management of the federally funded school nutrition programs. It will present a variety of topics such as: financial management and accountability, reporting and record keeping requirements, menu planning options, nutrition integrity, electronic submission of federal reimbursement requests, procurement, marketing, federal reviews, resources and technical assistance available, etc. During this workshop, participants will be able to network with each other, as well as meet the DOE School Nutrition Staff. Date: September 29 -30, 1998. The academy will begin promptly at 8:30 A.M. on Tuesday, September 29, and adjourn at 11:30 A.M. on Wednesday, September 30, 1998. (9/30) Place: Virginia Department of Education James Monroe Building, 101 N. 14th Street Richmond, Va. 23219 Room: PDC #2 (first floor) Phase 2-- The Department of Education's School Nutrition Programs staff assigned to the school division will conduct an on-site, one-day visit to assist the new directors. This visit will be conducted during October and is intended to provide hands-on technical assistance. A school nutrition specialist will contact the division to schedule this visit. Phase 3-- A two-hour workshop will be held in March to provide follow-up support and more details on designated topics such as USDA commodity processing, procurement, and bidding processes, etc. This workshop will be scheduled in conjunction with the Virginia School Food Service Association's (VSFSA) annual Supervisor/Industry Conference and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDAC) annual commodity processing workshop. (Note: This session is open only to those who participated in Phase 1.)
