SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 123
August 28, 1998 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program |
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program was implemented in Virginia in 1985. Since that time, educational supplies and materials such as workbooks and educational charts, for the program have been provided to localities through grant funds administered by the Virginia Department of State Police. For the 1998-1999 school year, grant funds are only available for the Virginia State Police to purchase and distribute workbooks for the elementary D.A.R.E. programs. Due to a reduction in grant funding, there is a need for public schools and law enforcement agencies to purchase workbooks for D.A.R.E. junior high/middle school and senior high school programs. Under the guidelines for use of Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA) funds, local money may be used to purchase educational supplies and materials for the D.A.R.E. program. Each school division has a contact person responsible for the administration of these funds. D.A.R.E. officers and SDFSCA coordinators need to work cooperatively to secure workbooks and educational supplies necessary for implementing D.A.R.E. programs. Attached is a list of expenditures appropriate for supporting D.A.R.E. programs with SDFSCA funds, plus a list of the SDFSCA coordinators in Virginia. Local officers are encouraged to contact SDFSCA coordinators to discuss local options for support of the D.A.R.E. secondary programs. If you have questions regarding the D.A.R.E. program, please contact Myra Shook, D.A.R.E. Educational Coordinator, at (804) 371-7586. For questions regarding SDFSCA programming, contact Arlene Cundiff, Coordinator of Safe and Drug-Free Schools Programs, at (804) 225-2871.
