October 9, 1998 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Nominations for Peer Review Committee - Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration Program Grant |
The Department of Education is soliciting nominations from division superintendents for local educators who would be willing to serve on the Peer Review Committee for the competitive Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration Program Grants. A program overview is attached, and additional information can be found in Supts. Administrative Memo No. 67, September 25, 1998. More than 20 Virginia educators will be invited to serve on the Peer Review Committee, which will meet on December 1-2, 1998, at the Roslyn Conference Center in Richmond. Because of driving distance, some participants may need to arrive on November 30. Nominees should be teachers, principals, administrators, curriculum specialists, or others who have knowledge of school reform, Standards of Learning, and instructional delivery models. Committee members will have the opportunity to read proposals on their own prior to the meeting, and for this activity, they will receive a $150 honorarium. The full two-day meeting will give reviewers the opportunity to read and rate proposals, meet in groups to discuss the applications, and make recommendations. Information will be sent to each participant concerning the specifics of the meeting by mid-November. Participants' mileage, meals, and lodging will be paid by the Department of Education. Selection of committee members will take into consideration a number of factors. Additional nominations may be solicited from institutions of higher education. To make your nomination, please complete and return the attached form to Diane Jay, Education Specialist, by October 28, 1998. Questions about nominating educators for the Peer Review Committee should be directed to Mrs. Jay at 804/225-2905. PDS/dj Attachments: A hard copy of this memo and its attachments will be sent to the superintendent's office.
