May 28, 1999
|FROM:||Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction
|SUBJECT:||Objectives for Personal Living and Finances|
On April 28, 1998, the General Assembly of Virginia approved SB527, a bill that directed the Virginia Board of Education to "develop and approve objectives for mathematics, at the middle and high school levels, for personal living and finances, which will focus on money management skills for individuals and families." During the April 28, 1999, Board of Education meeting, the Board approved the attached Objectives for Personal Living and Finances. The Code of Virginia 22.1-253.13:1.B specifies that these "objectives shall not be required to be included in the Board's Standards of Learning; and the Board shall not be required to evaluate student achievement concerning such objectives in the Standards of Learning Assessment Tests required by 22.1-253.13:3 of the Code of Virginia."
A Technical Assistance Resource Document is being sent to each division's mathematics contact person in conjunction with this memo. This resource document is intended to provide middle and high school teachers with information regarding the correlation of the approved objectives with the Mathematics Standards of Learning. A correlation of the approved objectives with vocational courses that are available to students is also included in the document.
