SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 43
February 26, 1999 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | History and Social Science Implementation Resource Documents |
This spring the Department of Education will produce grade- level implementation resource documents for the History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL). The resource documents will provide amplifications of the knowledge and skills presented in each standard. The resource documents, which should serve as a foundation for curriculum development, will not constitute a revision of the History and Social Science Standards of Learning. Committees comprised of curriculum coordinators from local school divisions and college faculty will be invited to work with the Department to identify the knowledge and skills that should be included in the amplifications for each standard. Those committees will be organized according to the following grade-level and subject categories: Kindergarten - Grade Three; Grade Four; Grades Five and Six; World History; World Geography; United States History; and Grade Seven & United States and Virginia Government. Consultants with expertise in history, geography, economics, and civics will be invited to review the work of the seven committees. In addition, teachers and administrators from local school divisions will have opportunities to examine and comment on the implementation resource documents. The resource documents will be available in May 1999 for use in orientation sessions with local curriculum coordinators. Questions about the history and social science implementation resource documents can be directed to Harvey R. Carmichael, History and Social Science Specialist, Virginia Department of Education, at (804) 225-2891. PDS/HRC/hc
