SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 64
March 26, 1999 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Regional SOL Expositions |
The Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Education Association will hold four regional SOL Expositions in the spring of l999 to feature SOL materials that are available from the Department of Education, selected school divisions, and participating commercial vendors. These expositions will bring together a wealth of teacher materials and resources for classroom and professional development use. The SOL Expositions are being sponsored through an appropriation from the General Assembly and are in accordance with the Department of Education's responsibility to develop and pilot model training activities for teachers, principals, and superintendents that relate to the Standards of Learning content and assessments, and to technology. The dates and sites for the expositions are: May 24--Abingdon Higher Education Center June 2--The Hotel Roanoke Conference Center June 4--Sheraton Fredericksburg Conference Center June 8--Williamsburg Marriott and Conference Center You are invited to send a team of ten individuals from your school division to attend the exposition designated for your part of the state. In order to gain maximum benefit from the one-day exposition, I encourage you to select a vertical team consisting of classroom teachers, building administrators, and central office administrators who work with curriculum and professional development issues. Enclosed is a Participant Pre-registration Form for that purpose which should be returned to Virginia Tech at the address listed on the form by April 27, l999. Since many local school divisions have developed high quality curriculum projects and materials related to SOL implementation, the expositions are designed to give localities an opportunity to display these materials and share with other school divisions. If you would like to nominate your school division or a school within your division as one of the exhibitors, please return the enclosed Request for Proposal Form to the Department of Education by April 27, 1999. Information on the exposition is being sent under separate cover to all SOL Training Initiative Contact personnel. For additional information, please contact Delores Dalton, Science Specialist, Secondary Instruction, 804-371-0778, or e-mail dudalton@pen.k12.va.us. PDS/dd Enclosures: SOL Exposition Participant Pre-Registration Form Request for Proposal to Exhibit at the SOL Expositions Information Sheet Request for Proposal to Exhibit at the SOL Exposition Form NOTE: A hard copy of this memo and its enclosures will be sent to the superintendent's office. Request for Proposal to Exhibit at SOL Expositions Information Sheet The Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Education Association invite school divisions to submit a Request for Proposal to participate as a Standards of Learning Exhibitor in the regional SOL Expositions. While school divisions may decide the site(s) for which they will submit a Request for Proposal, the Department of Education invites school divisions to consider exhibiting at all four sites. The purpose of the exhibits is to display current projects, instructional materials, and training modules that school divisions have developed for SOL implementation. The exhibits/posters should be designed to provide an opportunity for participants to discuss and explore successful practices and approaches that may be replicated in their school divisions. These exhibits will not require formal presentations. Standards of Learning Exhibits will be displayed throughout the day at each site. Exhibits will open at 9:30 A.M. and close at 3:00 P.M. Exhibiting school divisions should have someone available throughout the day to answer questions about the exhibit. Handouts describing the exhibits are appropriate. The Department of Education will distribute a program agenda for all participants that will list the exhibitors and a brief description of each project. Spaces for exhibits will be provided by the Department of Education at no cost to school divisions. Each exhibitor will have available one six-foot table with pipe and drape. Audio-visual equipment and related needs will be the responsibility of the exhibiting school division. Exhibitors should plan to be set up by 9:30 A.M. on the morning of the exposition. Thank you for your consideration of this invitation and for your continued support of educational excellence for children in the Commonwealth. If you have questions about the exhibits, you may contact Delores Dalton, Science Specialist, Secondary Instruction, at 804-371-0778.
