| SUBJECT: | Standards of Learning Revision for Art, Theatre, Music, Foreign Language, Health, Physical Education, and Driver Education |
I am pleased to announce that during the Board of
Education's April Retreat, the Board approved a work plan
presented by the Department of Education to revise the
Standards of Learning (SOL) in art, theatre, music,
foreign language, health, physical education, and driver
education. The enclosed work plan provides for the
revision of art, theatre, music, and foreign language SOL
during Phase I, May 1999 - June 2000, and for the
revision of Health, Physical Education, and Driver
Education SOL in Phase II, May 2000 - June 2001.
The Department of Education is seeking nominations from
division superintendents for individuals who are
qualified and available to serve on committees to revise
the SOL in art, theatre, music, and foreign language
during the summer of 1999. Each content area committee
will have a writing team consisting of at least 20
individuals. Nominees should be teachers, principals,
administrators, content specialists, parents, or other
stakeholders who have knowledge of the content areas and
experience with standards development.
Committee members will be asked to review information
related to their content areas prior to convening for a
week in July or August to revise the Standards of
Learning. Committee members who are not under contract
with a school division will receive an honorarium. The
Department of Education will cover expenses for mileage,
meals, and lodging related to the revision process.
A nomination form is attached to be duplicated as needed. You are
encouraged to nominate individuals for each discipline area
listed on the nomination form. Please return the forms to Kate

786-5466 by May 28, 1999. Committee members will be notified of
their selection and provided with further information regarding
the revision process by June 15, 1999.
