SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 108
May 14, 1999 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Review of the History and Social Science Implementation Resource Documents |
As you may be aware, grade-level implementation resource documents that delineate important history and social science knowledge and skills required by the History and Social Science Standards of Learning are under development and will be disseminated to school divisions in June. These implementation resource documents will not constitute a revision of the History and Social Science Standards of Learning, but will serve as a tool to enable classroom teachers to teach more effectively the history and social science standards. The Department of Education would like to extend to you an invitation to send one elementary, one middle, and one high school classroom teacher to a meeting to review and comment on the draft documents. The forum through which the Department will receive teachers? comments on the implementation documents will be conducted by Department of Education staff from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. following each of the upcoming SOL Expositions. The teachers selected to review the documents should have experience and expertise in teaching history and the social sciences. They should arrive at the meeting site by 2:30 p.m. The dates and sites for the meetings are listed below (see attached directions to each site).
