SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 113
May 21, 1999
|FROM:||Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction
|SUBJECT:||Model Training and Programs Initiative|
The Model Training and Programs Initiative was established by the 1998 Virginia General Assembly to provide model teacher, principal, and superintendent training, in-service activities, and programs geared specifically to the Standards of Learning, the statewide assessments, and technology applications. To support this initiative, $800,000 was appropriated to the Department of Education for fiscal year 1999. The department has combined this state funding with some federal funds (Eisenhower and Title VI), as well as private dollars, to provide school divisions with the components of the initiative described on the attachment. More detailed descriptions of these products will be available on the department's homepage www.pen.k12.va.us. Example components include content modules, lesson samplers, videotapes, software, CD-ROMS, Web-based SOL- discipline links, and SOL instructional support materials. The distribution of the materials will vary depending on the intended use and audience. Some of the components are available now, and others will be released in the coming weeks. A distribution form is included in this packet to permit you to select those materials that you want sent to your schools/school division, as well as the person to receive them. Please return the distribution form to Jane Johnson, Virginia Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120. We look forward to sharing additional information regarding these materials with you through the DOE Hour, video- conferencing, regional workshops and institutes, Best Practice Centers, and the DOE Web page. If you have questions regarding the products, please contact the appropriate specialists or Jo Lynne DeMary, assistant superintendent for instruction, at 804) 225-3252 or via E-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. PDS/JLD/jj Attachments: A hard copy of this memo and its attach- ment will be sent to the superintendent's office.
