SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 149
August 6, 1999

INFORMATIONAL

TO: Division Superintendents
FROM:

Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction
SUBJECT:

Youth Violence Prevention in Virginia:
A Needs Assessment

The purpose of this memo is to provide a copy of the
publication, Youth Violence in Virginia: A Needs Assessment,
to each division superintendent.  A second purpose is to
provide a mechanism whereby limited additional copies may be
obtained at no charge to Virginia school divisions.

This report was originally prepared for the Center for
Injury and Violence Prevention at the Virginia Department of
Health.  The work of conducting the statewide needs
assessment for the Department of Health was coordinated by
Dr. Dewey Cornell, Director of the Virginia Youth Violence
Project at the Curry School of Education, University of
  Virginia.

As school administrators continue to search for ways to
address  the ongoing issue of student violence, this
document provides additional insight into proven strategies
and recommendations for school divisions.  More importantly,
this publication is written specifically about and for
  Virginia schools.

A limited number of additional copies are available free of
charge.  An order form has been enclosed for your
convenience.  Questions may be directed to Arlene Cundiff in
the Office of Compensatory Programs at(804)225-2871.

  PDS/saj
Enclosures:  A hard copy of this memo and its attachment
will be sent to the superintendent's office.
