We are pleased to inform you that the July 1999 revision of English as a Second Language: Handbook for Teachers and Administrators is complete. A copy of this handbook will be sent to the ESL contact person in each school division, and to the principal of every school in the Commonwealth. There have been several changes to state policies regarding ESL instruction and assessment during the last few years. This handbook provides a succinct resource for information related to state and federal policies and suggestions for the implementation of local policies. Information related to instruction and curriculum is also outlined. Additional copies of the ESL handbook are available upon request by contacting Ms. Priscilla Clayborne at (804) 786- 5088. This handbook will also soon be available on the Virginia Department of Education's website at http://www.pen.k12.va.us.
