SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 182
October 1, 1999
|FROM:||Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction
|SUBJECT:||SUICIDE PREVENTION GUIDELINES|
Attached is a copy of the Suicide Prevention Guidelines, which were mandated by Senate Bill 1250, passed by the 1999 General Assembly. These guidelines were approved by the Board of Education on September 23, 1999. In a proclamation issued by Governor Gilmore, SB 1250 is now known as the Lisa Renee Law, in memory of Lisa Renee Hall. A certificate of recognition (copy attached), was presented to Lisa's parents, Floyd and Karen Hall of Hardy, Virginia, by Senator Steve Newman, sponsor of SB 1250, and Secretary of Education Wilbert Bryant during a ceremony on September 29, 1999. These guidelines should be observed when school personnel suspect that a student is at risk for committing suicide. You will note that in the appendices of this document, material has been provided to help local school personnel conduct an assessment of suicide risk. If you have any questions regarding this material, please contact Dr. Don Fleming, specialist for special education and student services, at (804) 225-2185. PDS/DCF/kts Attachment: A hard copy of this memo and its attachment will be sent to the superintendent's office. .
