SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 183
October 1, 1999 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Regional K-8 Mathematics Training Opportunities on Probability and Statistics |
The Virginia Department of Education will sponsor four
regional K-8 mathematics train-the-trainer institutes in
November of 1999. The purpose of these Standards of Learning
institutes is to train trainers within the school divisions
to use the recently disseminated staff development modules
titled Probability and Statistics for Elementary and Middle
School Teachers. Each two-day institute will include
separate sessions focusing on content and instructional
strategies for elementary and middle school trainers. The
dates and sites for the institutes are:
November 1-2: Williamsburg Marriott and Conference
Center
November 8-9: Petersburg Days Inn
November 12-13: Abingdon Higher Education Center
(offered in conjunction with the
Southwest Virginia Public Education
Consortium's Lead Teacher Institute)
November 30-December 1: Harrisonburg Four Points Sheraton
You are invited to send a team of two trainers (one to
attend the elementary school session and one to attend the
middle school session) from your school division to attend
an institute in your part of the state. However, your team
may register for any institute that best meets your needs.
The participants will be provided with information,
materials, and activities that may be used to train other
school personnel. In order for your school division to gain
maximum benefit from this training institute, I would
encourage you to send individuals who are interested in
serving as school division trainers/mentors on this topic.
The institutes are being sponsored through an Eisenhower
Title II grant. The institutes will begin at 8:30 A.M. and
conclude by 4 P.M. each day. The Department of Education
will provide lunch and breaks, as well as one night's
lodging (the night after the first day of training) for
participants residing more than 30 miles from the training
site. Additionally, a stipend of $50 will be provided for
participants attending the Saturday session on November 13,
1999,in Abingdon. School divisions will be responsible for
the cost of substitute teachers when required,
transportation costs, and any additional meals. Local
Eisenhower funds or SOL Training Initiative funds may be
used to cover these costs.
Two participant registration forms are enclosed with this
memo. Please identify two individuals(one elementary and one
middle school trainer)to participate in one of the
institutes listed above. Participants should be asked to
complete the enclosed registration form and either mail or
fax a copy of the registration form to the address listed on
the form by October 25, 1999. Participants will receive a
confirmation letter and directions after their registration
forms are received.
A copy of this memo is being sent to your key instructional
leader, your SOL professional development initiative
coordinator, and your division's mathematics leaders. If
you have any questions or comments, please contact Dr. Carol
Rezba, elementary and middle school mathematics specialist
at (804) 225-2676.
