| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Courses and Tuition Assistance for Educators of Students with Visual Impairments |
The Virginia Department of Education recognizes the need to
provide both a strategy and funds to support the
implementation of a teacher preparation program for teachers
seeking endorsement in visual impairment. The University of
Louisville offers a distance learning program that provides
the required course work to meet the competencies of
Virginia's Licensure Regulations for School Personnel.
Grant funds are available to support this initiative through
Virginia's State Improvement Plan for Special Education.
Teachers who hold a provisional or a special education
conditional license with an endorsement in visual impairment
may be eligible for this program. In addition, the teacher
must have an E-mail account, access to the World Wide Web,
an assigned mentor, and a recommendation by the
administration of the school division. Teachers interested
in receiving an application for the program should submit
the attached form to Sandra P. Aldrich, specialist,
Comprehensive System of Personnel Development, Division of
Teacher Education and Licensure, Virginia Department of
Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120 by
