| SUBJECT: | Individual Student Alternative Education Program |
The Virginia Department of Education will make $2,247,581 available for reimbursement
of expenditures by school divisions for students with an Individual Student
Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP) as set forth in Virginia School Law §22.1-254.D.
These funds are authorized under financial assistance for ISAEP services by the
1999 Virginia General Assembly and are offered contingent upon availability.
Reimbursement for the fiscal year 1999-2000 will be for services for students 16
years of age and older who meet the provisions established in the Code and by the
Board of Education. The provisions include:
*a meeting between the student, parents, and principal/designee
*the development of an Individualized Student Alternative Education Program
*career guidance counseling
*attendance in a general educational development (GED) or other alternative
education program for students that meet qualifications
*counseling on the economic impact of failing to complete high school, and
*procedures for reenrollment
To assist you in initiating an ISAEP program for 1999-2000, the following resources
are attached:

Attachment C - DOE Hour Announcement for January 18, 2000
Attachment D - ISAEP Guidelines approved by the Board
Attachment E - ISAEP Application forms and procedures
Please submit your application no later than February 11, 2000. If no program is
planned, write on the face of the application form your school division name and
code, as well as the words "NO PROGRAM PLANNED."
