SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 9
March 17, 2000 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | JoLynne DeMary Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Student Search Guidelines |
As directed by 1998 and 1999 General Assembly action ('22.1-277.01:2), the Board of
Education, in consultation with the Office of the Attorney General, has developed
the document, Guidelines Concerning Student Searches in Public Schools. The
guidelines were approved by the Board of Education on November 18, 1999.
These guidelines are intended to be used by school officials to develop local
policies and procedures for student searches. The guidelines cannot address all
possible issues that could develop as a result of student searches. It is very
important for school divisions and their legal counsel to assure that local policies
and practices are in compliance with state and federal laws and constitutional
principles governing student searches.
Two copies of the guidelines are enclosed. Additional copies may be requested at
no charge. An order form is enclosed for your convenience.
Questions may be directed to Arlene Cundiff in the Office of Compensatory Programs
at (804) 225-2871.
