| FROM: | Jo Lynne DeMary
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Implementation of House Bill 1541 |
During the 2000 General Assembly session,
House Bill 1541 was passed. A copy of the bill is attached. This bill amended
the Code of Virginia by adding § 22.1-278.3 which requires school
boards to develop and implement, no later than January 1, 2001, policies
ensuring that students are not required to convey or deliver materials
that:
Section 22.1-278.3 requires the Board of Education to monitor the implementation of this requirement and to report back to the Co-chairmen of the House Committee on Education and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education and Health by the beginning of the 2001 session of the General Assembly. In order to comply with this requirement, this department must collect this information from each local school division. Please complete the attached certification and return it to Dr. Cynthia A. Cave, director of policy, by October 15, 2000 along with a copy of your school division's policy. If the policy is not complete, please forward when completed.
