INFORMATIONAL

TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: JoLynne DeMary
Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction
SUBJECT: Project ECOLE

The purpose of this memorandum is to inform you about Project ECOLE. Item 136E.9 of
Chapter 935, 1999 Acts of Assembly, requires the Department of Education to assist in
the dissemination of information about Project ECOLE to school divisions and to provide
technical assistance to school divisions replicating the program.

Project ECOLE, an @Electronic Community of Learning and Education,@ is an Internet-based
resource for teachers and students. The website www.vcimp.com includes activities
and assessments linked to the Standards of Learning for grades K-12 in mathematics,
science, history and social science, English, and computer technology.

Virginia Computer Institute, Inc. developed Project ECOLE and established a partnership
with Manassas Park City Schools to implement an automated curriculum linked to the
Standards of Learning. As development continues, Project ECOLE is being made available
to other school divisions at a cost of $5,000 per school for training and technical
support. Other requirements for participation include the commitment of two teachers
to developing SOL multimedia projects, two days of training, Internet access, special
software, and access to a digital camera or a camcorder.

Should you want additional information about Project ECOLE, please contact Miriam
Corcoran, associate superintendent, Manassas Park City Schools, at (703) 335-8854 or
m.corcoran@erols.com.
