SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 82
April 21, 2000 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | JoLynne DeMary Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | 2000-2001 Learn and Serve K-12 New Grant Program |
The Department of Education is pleased to announce the availability of Learn and Serve K-12 grant funds to be awarded to school divisions for the development of new programs to implement a high quality school-based, service-learning program in the 2000-2001 school year. Currently, Virginia has 23 Learn and Serve projects that provide opportunities for students to apply classroom learning through service projects in the local community. Funding for the Learn and Serve K-12 program is provided by the Corporation for National Service through a competitive application process. New Learn and Serve programs will be awarded $13,000 and are required to match the grant with the same amount of local or state funds. All funding for these programs are contingent upon the availability of funds from the corporation. School divisions interested in developing a Learn and Serve program are invited to submit a grant proposal. We plan to increase the number of programs from 23 to 33 during the 2000-2001 school year. To obtain a copy of the Guidelines and Procedures for the Competitive Grant, please call Julie Norman at (804) 371-2768 in the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education Services. If you have questions about the Learn and Serve program or about the grant proposal, please contact Becky Marable (mailto:rmarable@pen.k12.va.us) at (804) 225-2850 or Bob Almond (mailto:ralmond@pen.k12.va.us) at (804) 225-3349.
