Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction
|SUBJECT:||Summer Training Workshops for the Virginia Foreign Language Standards of Learning|
The Virginia Department of Education, in collaboration with the Foreign Language Association of Virginia (FLAVA), is pleased to announce two two-day training workshops on implementing the revised Foreign Language Standards of Learning (SOL). The Board of Education plans to take final action on the foreign language standards at its June 22, 2000, meeting. The two-day workshops will be offered July 17-18, 2000, and will be repeated July 19-20, 2000, at the Wyndham Roanoke Airport Hotel in Roanoke, Virginia. Workshop sessions will be conducted by Dr. Linda Wallinger, principal specialist for foreign language and ESL, and members of the committee that developed the Foreign Language SOL. Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with the revised Foreign Language SOL, discuss the implications of the SOL for teaching and learning foreign languages in the commonwealth, and develop strategies to use in their school divisions to create foreign language curricula and classroom lesson plans. Each school division is invited to send a team of two foreign language educators who will return to the division to serve as trainers and resources for other foreign language teachers. Participants who attend alone will be paired with educators from another division for discussion and curriculum development purposes. There is a registration fee of $35 per participant that covers the cost of lunch and breaks each day. School divisions and/or participants must pay the travel, lodging, and other meal expenses associated with the workshop. Workshop registration information and hotel reservation forms are included with this memorandum. Checks should be made payable to FLAVA, and participants should send their workshop registration forms and registration fees by May 26, 2000 to Mrs. Nancy Cundiff, supervisor of foreign language/ESL, Roanoke, County Public Schools, 5937 Cove Rd., N.W., Roanoke, VA 24019. Hotel reservations should be made using the enclosed hotel reservation form and mailed directly to the Wyndham Roanoke Airport Hotel by June 25, 2000. For further information, please contact Dr. Linda Wallinger, foreign language/ESL specialist, at firstname.lastname@example.org or (804) 225-2593.
