Informational

TO:                     Division Superintendents

FROM:               Jo Lynne DeMary
                           Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:         House Joint Resolution 270

The clerk of the House of Delegates has asked me to send a copy of House Joint Resolution 270 to superintendents of all Virginia school divisions to inform them of action by the Virginia General Assembly this year to recognize October 17, 2000, as the Day of National Concern about Young People and Gun Violence. I have enclosed a copy of the resolution for your convenience.

The Day of National Concern is supported by many state and national organizations. It provides students with the opportunity to pledge that they will never carry a gun to school, never resolve a dispute with a gun, and that they will use their influence with their friends to keep them from using guns to settle disputes. Additional information about the Day of National Concern can be found on the Student Pledge against Gun Violence website ( http://www.pledge.org/ ).

I join the Virginia PTA, the PTSA, and other organizations in encouraging you to continue to promote school safety and reduce incidents of violence involving the use of guns by young people.

Should you have any questions about school safety initiatives, please contact Marsha E. Owens, specialist, School Violence Prevention, at (804) 225-2928 or mowens@mail.vak12ed.edu
