SUPTS. MEMO NO. 1
January 12, 2001
ADMINISTRATIVE
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Jo Lynne DeMary
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Middle and Elementary School Connectivity Survey |
The high school capacity survey conducted last fall requested detailed information on the technology capacity of high schools in order to establish a baseline for participation in the Standards of Learning Technology Initiative. An abbreviated version of the high school capacity survey requesting information on middle and elementary schools is being conducted at this time. Information from the two surveys will be combined to form a complete picture of the connectivity status of Virginia’s schools. We expect to be asked to provide this information to the Virginia General Assembly and other parties interested in improving Internet access and network-based services to our schools.
We ask that the survey be completed by the school division technology coordinator. The survey requests the connectivity status of each school and the number of Internet-capable and connected computers in various types of rooms in the school. Also requested are the number of FTE positions providing technical support to the school and information on telephones in classrooms.
The survey is automated using Microsoft Excel 97. The survey and instructions may be accessed on the Web at:
www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Technology.
School divisions are requested to return the completed survey via E-mail by February 9, 2001. Questions regarding the survey may be directed to Bethann Canada, director of information technology (mailto:bcanada@pen.k12.va.us), or to Lan Neugent, assistant superintendent for technology (mailto:lneugent@pen.k12.va.us).
Thank you for your assistance.
