SUBJECT:	Survey of Limited English Proficient(LEP) Students: Part II

The Department of Education issued Part I of the Survey of Limited English Proficient (LEP) Students to each locality in October 2000 (Administrative Supts. Memo No.57). A federal grant received by the Department of Education requires the collection of additional data not requested in previous fall surveys. Thus, the LEP survey has again been divided into two parts. Part II, the current survey, requests the following information for the 2000-2001 school year:

Number of LEP students retained (grades 7-12)
Number of LEP students who exited the program
Tests and methods used for reclassification
Tests used for native language reading comprehension
Number of teachers who received ESL in-service or pre-service training

Part II of the LEP Survey must be accessed electronically and completed using Excel 97 or a later version. The LEP Survey can be downloaded from the Department of Education’s website at http://www.pen.k12.va.us by selecting "Reports" at the top of the home page or "Data and Publications" at the bottom of the page and then selecting "LEP Survey 2000-2001: Part II" from the "Collections" listing. Detailed instructions for completing and submitting the report are enclosed.

Each contact person for the LEP Survey report should

coordinate the collection of the data for the division and submit the data by e-mail to LEP@mail.vak12ed.edu by August 10, 2001.
