|SUBJECT:||2000-01 Survey of Children who are Medically Fragile|
The Virginia Department of Education is gathering 2000-01 cost data and other information on educating children who are medically fragile and placed in nursing facilities, long-stay acute care hospitals, and/or immediate care facilities-mental retardation. These data will be used to project and estimate future costs for the education of such children.
The Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia (effective January 1, 2001) clarify school divisions' responsibility for certain children placed in such facilities (8 VAC 20-80-40 B 10 a (1)). The school division where the parent or parents reside is responsible for providing special education services to the child who is placed in such a facility under funding from the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (Medicaid).
Each school division is required to submit a survey of medically fragile children, regardless of whether the school division served such children in 2000-01. Surveys should be returned to the Department of Education by August 17, 2001.
Attached please find the survey instrument and instructions in Excel and pdf format. School divisions may return either the electronic spreadsheet or paper copy to Jerry Mathews at firstname.lastname@example.org or the Office of Special Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120.
