SUBJECT: 2002 Triennial School Census

In accordance with the provisions of 22.1-281 through 22.1-286, Code of Virginia, March 1 through July 15, 2002, is designated as the period during which the 2002 Triennial School Census will be conducted and completed. The Department of Education must receive your summary of census returns no later than August 15, 2002.

School divisions will be required to submit a summary count of all persons ages 5-19 residing in their respective counties, cities, and towns. This single statistic will be reported to the department and subsequently verified by division superintendents.

We are requesting that each school division designate a school census contact person. Information on the census contact person can be submitted on the School and Staff Administrations Web-based form. The form can be accessed from the Department of Educations website at the following address:

The department is updating the instructions, forms and other information relative to conducting the 2002 school census. We are requesting school divisions that wish to share their procedures for conducting the census to send that information to the census e-mail address: mailto:census@pen.k12.va.us. Model procedures will be posted on the departments website by February 2002.
