| FROM: | Jo Lynne DeMary
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia |
The Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia have been published for 30 days in the Virginia Register of Regulations and became final on December 20, 2000. The effective date for the regulations is January 1, 2001. The regulations are posted on the department’s Web page at www.pen.k12.va.us.
The Special Education Program Standards are repealed as the caseload and teacher assignment requirements are incorporated into the special education regulations.
The Department of Education is in the process of printing and preparing audiotape and Braille versions of the regulations. In addition, the department is revising A Parent’s Guide to Special Education to conform to the regulations and plans to have this publication available as soon as possible. The department will provide sufficient copies of the guide to school divisions for distribution to every parent of a child with a disability.
Attachment A is a form to order printed copies of the regulations and the parent’s guide. These will be printed and shipped separately.
