|SUBJECT:||Middle and High School Reading Strategies Workshop Featuring Dr. Kylene Beers|
On June 22, 2001, the Virginia Department of Education and The Library of Virginia’s Center for the Book will co-sponsor a reading strategies workshop featuring secondary reading expert Dr. Kylene Beers of the University of Houston. Dr. Beers will illustrate a strategic and comprehensive program for teaching reading comprehension strategies to secondary English students. Dr. Beers’ reading strategies are research-based, appropriate for students in grades 6 through 12, and are designed to improve reading comprehension and enhance student performance on the Standards of Learning assessments.
Your school division is invited to send middle and high school English Department Chairpersons or their representatives to the workshop. These participants will be provided with information, materials, and activities that may be used to train other English teachers. In order to gain maximum benefit from the workshop, teachers who attend should be interested in serving as school division trainers/mentors for reading comprehension.
The workshop will be held at The Library of Virginia in Richmond from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2001. All materials and lunch will be provided for participants at no cost. For participants who require overnight lodging, a list of nearby hotels that honor state rates will be sent to them after their registration forms have been received. Participants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations and for the costs associated with overnight lodging and travel to and from the workshop site.
To register participants, please fax the attached registration form to Linda Henderson at (804) 786-5466 before June 1, 2001. Space is limited to approximately 160 participants. Letters of confirmation, with directions to The Library of Virginia and hotel information, will be sent after the registration forms are received.
