The Department of Education is continuing to provide the data analysis service for the Virginia Wellness-Related Fitness Test (VWRFT) data for the 2000-01 school year. Although the reporting of the VWRFT data is a division option, 79 percent of the school divisions in the commonwealth reported their data for the 1999-2000 school year.

The divisions that elect to submit their data will derive the following benefits:

• information that health and physical education teachers should use in planning for the instructional needs of students,
• information that can be communicated to parents about the wellness-related fitness level of their children, and
• the Department of Education will aggregate the division data and post the state summary at http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/PE/. The names of each division will not be identified on the state summary.

This year all data collection will be performed electronically and the school and division VWRFT results will be calculated immediately. This will enable your teachers to use their VWRFT summary during summer program planning and staff development.

A separate mailing, which includes instructions for submitting the report, is being sent to your designated physical education contact person.
