SUBJECT: School/Community Health Services Grants

Since 1992, seventy school divisions have received grants from funds appropriated by the General Assembly to provide health services to children of school age. The 2000 General Assembly appropriated $1,500,000 for the first year and $1,500,000 for the second year of the 2000-2002 biennium for planning and implementing school-community health services projects. At least six additional pilot projects will be awarded each year.

The Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services are jointly issuing a request for proposals for the planning and implementation of the school/community health services projects. Planning grants of up to $50,000 will be made to select projects for the period January 2002, to June 30, 2002. Planning sites will be eligible to receive up to $200,000 in implementation funds for the period July 1, 2002, to June 20 2003. To be eligible for the funds, a school division must be, or agree to become, a Medicaid provider approved by the Department of Medical Assistance Services and must participate in the Medicaid billing program for special education and health services.

Grant applications may be obtained in hard copy or on disk from Gwen Smith, school health and school/community health services grant specialist. Applications must be submitted to the Department of Education by October 19, 2001, for grant awards to be made in January 2002. If you have questions or need additional information, please call Mrs. Smith at (804) 786-8671, fax (804) 371-8796, or e-mail
