SUPTS. MEMO NO. 145

INFORMATIONAL

TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Jo Lynne DeMary
Superintendent of Public Instruction
SUBJECT: Partnership Grant Awards to Local School Divisions

The Department of Education is very pleased that 96 percent of Virginia's 134 school divisions and the Department of Correctional Education were recipients of local partnership grants to improve student achievement through local education partnerships. Your participation in this program clearly demonstrates strong support for building partnerships that essentially will lead to increasing student academic achievement.

Governor Gilmore announced on September 10, 2001, that more than $7.8 million in continuation grant funding from the Governor's Virginia Business-Education Partnership program was awarded to school divisions. Grants ranged from $15,000 to $819,000 for improving student achievement through local education partnerships. The grants were made available through the School-to-Work Opportunities Act of 1994.

The attached spreadsheet lists each school division and the amount of funding awarded for the 2001-2002 school year. Additional information about individual grants can be obtained by logging onto the Virginia Business-Education Partnership Web page at www.vbep.state.va.us or contacting the VBEP office at 804/692-0244.

Best wishes to you and your school division staff members as you continue to provide outstanding educational programs for the students in the commonwealth.
