|SUBJECT:||Request for Updated Acceptable Use Policies|
In 1999, the General Assembly enacted legislation (Title 22.1-70.2 of the Code of Virginia) which required school divisions to submit an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to the Department of Education. The code was amended in July 2001 to add an additional requirement that school divisions be required to select a filtering technology for all Internet accessible computers.
The new legislation also provides that on or before December 1, 2001, and biennially thereafter, the Superintendent of Public Instruction shall submit a report to the Virginia legislature stating that all school divisions are in compliance with the legislation. To that end, each school division will be required to file an updated AUP policy to the Department of Education by November 16, 2001.
