SUBJECT:

Granville P. Meade Scholarships

The Department of Education is pleased to announce the availability of the Granville P. Meade Scholarships to provide financial assistance to students who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college. The Granville P. Meade fund provides scholarship awards to worthy and needy Virginia high school seniors to attend one of Virginias public or private colleges or universities. Additional information about the scholarships may be found in Attachment A.

Attachment B contains the scholarship application. Principals of all public and nonpublic senior high schools are requested to assist in making students aware of the scholarship opportunity. In the past year, each scholarship was in the amount of $2,000 per year for four years, provided the student continues to meet the scholarship requirements.

Interested students are asked to submit scholarship applications to their high school principals by January 15, 2002. Each public school principal will in turn submit all applications received to the superintendent of the division. Private schools will submit their applications to their own associations. These applications will be due in the superintendents and associations offices by January 31, 2002.

Each division superintendent will review the applications received and select the five most qualified high school seniors in the division. The division superintendent will forward these five applications to the chairperson of his or her regional study group screening committee (Attachment C) by February 28, 2002. Each chairperson will submit the five best applications to the Virginia Department of Education by March 31, 2002. Private school and home school associations also will be asked to submit their five best applications to the Virginia Department of Education by March 31, 2002. All applications are to be mailed to Vernon L. Wildy, Virginia Department of Education, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120.
