SUPTS. MEMO NO. 7
August 3, 2001
|FROM:||Jo Lynne DeMary
Superintendent of Public Instruction
|SUBJECT:||Fee for the Laboratory Phase of Driver Education|
Pursuant to Item 138.C.2.e, Chapter 1073, 2000 Acts of Assembly, only fees approved by the Board of Education may be collected for the laboratory phase of driver education. On July 29, 1982, the Board of Education approved the guidelines for charging a fee for the laboratory phase of driver education during the regular school term. Charging this fee is optional for local school boards and has no impact on the fee charged for the summer school driver education program which continues to be authorized without prior approval from the Department of Education. Summer school fees will not result in a prorata reduction in basic aid.
To report that your school division does not charge a fee for the laboratory phase of driver education during the regular school term, complete Parts II and III of Attachment A, which can be downloaded from /administrators/superintendents_memos/2001/reg007a.pdf.
To be eligible to charge a fee during the regular school term, complete Parts I, II, and III of Attachment A. The fee charged, plus the calculated per pupil reimbursement from basic aid, must not exceed the average per pupil cost computed in Part I.
The "average per pupil cost" for the laboratory (behind-the-wheel) phase of the program is based on financial data from the previous school year's regular term program.
Applications for approval to charge a fee must be submitted on Attachment A to the attention of Vanessa Wigand, specialist--health, physical education, and driver education, by September 30, 2001.
