INFORMATIONAL

TO:

Division Superintendents

FROM:

Jo Lynne DeMary

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

Review of the K-12 English and Science Standards of Learning: Seeking Input from the School Community

The Board of Education at its March 27, 2002, meeting adopted a revised schedule for the review of the English Standards of Learning. The attached Standards of Learning Review Schedule (Revised March 27, 2002) calls for the English Standards of Learning review to begin immediately and to be completed by November 2002. The board approved this action to ensure that Virginia is positioned to comply with annual testing of reading in grades 3 through 8 as required in the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

Consistent with the schedule adopted by the board in September 2000, the Department of Education will proceed with the Science Standards of Learning review beginning this spring. It is anticipated that the science standards review will be completed on a timeline similar to that for the English Standards of Learning.

An important part of this review process for both the English and Science Standards of Learning is the solicitation of comments from classroom teachers, administrators, curriculum supervisors, science educators, and anyone else who has worked with the current standards. Please inform personnel in your school division that forms for comments regarding the current English and science standards will be located on the Virginia Department of Education website at http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/engsolcomments.html and http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/scisolcomments.html, respectively. Comments will be received at these addresses from April 5, 2002, until May 15, 2002.

If you have any questions about the English or Science Standards of Learning reviews, please contact Linda Poorbaugh, English specialist, Office of Elementary Instructional Services at lpoorbau@mail.vak12ed.edu or (804) 786-3925 or Jim Firebaugh, science specialist, Office of Middle Instructional Services at jfirebau@mail.vak12ed.edu or (804) 225-2651.
