Virginia Reads Brochure |
The Virginia
Department of Education is pleased to provide school divisions with copies of
the brochure, Virginia Reads. This parent brochure highlights the Virginia
English Standards of Learning for kindergarten through the fifth grade, and
provides suggestions for ways parents can assist their children in achieving
these academic standards.
For this
school year 2001-2002, brochures will be provided for parents of all children
in kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the enrollment report that
was submitted on September 30. These
brochures will be mailed directly to each elementary school during the week of
April 8-12. If additional copies are needed, they are available in a PDF file
on the Reading and Language Arts website http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/Reading/reading.html.
It is my hope
that by offering parents simple specific activities they can do at home, we can
ensure the reading success of Virginias children. Attachment A offers a list of suggested activities that
principals could use when distributing the brochures.
