Update on the Implementation of the 2001 History and Social Science and Mathematics Standards of Learning and the Impact on Assessment |
To assist school divisions in aligning existing
curriculum to the revised Standards of Learning for history and social science
and mathematics, I am pleased to inform you that all of the resources developed
by the Department of Education have been updated to reflect the 2001 Standards
of Learning. The documents are posted
on the Department of Education website at http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/sol.html.
The CD/ROM that contains the 2001 History and Social
Science Standards of Learning, the Curriculum Framework, the Crosswalk of
Common Content from the 1999 Teacher Resource Guide to the 2001 Curriculum
Framework was sent to each school division central office and each school last
winter. The CD/ROM that contains the 2001 Mathematics Standards of Learning,
curriculum framework, and the crosswalk between the 2001 Standards of Learning
and the 1995 Standards of Learning will be shipped this month to each school
division central office and each school.
School divisions are encouraged to begin work on
curriculum alignment and to prepare for full implementation of the revised
Standards of Learning for history and social science and mathematics by the
2003-2004 school year. For history and
social science the 2002-2003 Standards of Learning assessments will include core
items based on the common content and
field-test items based on the new 2001 content. The
2002-2003 Standards of Learning mathematics assessments will include core items
based on the 1995 Standards of Learning and
field-test items based on the 2001 content. The 2003-2004 Standards of Learning assessments
in both history and social science and mathematics will be completely aligned
with the 2001 Standards of Learning.
