Application Packet for Learn and Serve K-12
Competitive Grant Program |
The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to
announce the availability of Learn and Serve K-12 grant funds to be awarded to
school divisions for the development of new school-based, service-learning
programs for the 2002-2003 school year.
Currently, Virginia has 30 Learn and Serve projects that provide
opportunities for students to apply classroom learning through service projects
in a community.
The Corporation for National and Community Service
provides funding for the Learn and Serve K-12 programs. Programs selected for
funding will be awarded up to $25,000 and are required to match the grant with
the same amount of local or state funds.
Many provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 either encourage or allow
service-learning to be implemented as a strategy for helping young people, as
specified in Titles I, III, IV, V, and VII. See http://www.servicelearning.org/library/online_documents/pdfs/nochild.pdf.
Applications for Learn and Serve are due in the
Office of Adult Education and Literacy no later than August 19, 2002, by 4:30 p.m. Learn and Serve is a competitive grant
