October 18, 2002

INFORMATIONAL

TO:

Division Superintendents

FROM:

Jo Lynne DeMary

Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:

Resource Guide for Crisis Management

The Office of Compensatory Programs will provide each division superintendent with a single copy of the publication, Resource Guide for Crisis Management in Virginia Schools. This document (being mailed under separate cover) is not just an update; instead, it is a complete revision and reflects current best practices in crisis management. In addition, it provides information needed for school divisions to meet the requirements enacted by the 2002 Virginia General Assembly:

HB 46 Requires that incidents involving acts of terrorism be addressed in the school crisis and emergency plan that is required to be developed by every public school. (Amends 22.1-279.8)

HB 886 Requires that public schools include communication procedures in their emergency management plan for parents to be able to contact the relevant school regarding the location and safety of their children and also by which school officials may contact parents during a critical event or an emergency. (Amends 22.1-279.8)

Additional copies will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge. Please be conservative when ordering, as only a limited number of copies have been printed. The document is available on the Department of Educations website: www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/crisis-guide.html.

The 1999 Model School Crisis Management Plan has been updated with two addendums: Part I Terrorism and Part II Communication. This document is also available on the Department of Educations website: www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/model.pdf.

Questions may be directed to Arlene Cundiff (acundiff@mail.vak12ed.edu), coordinator of the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program at (804) 225-2871.
